daily upated news at www.bioplasticsmagazine.com News Packaging related properties of biopolymers Because of the multitude of biopolymers on the market it is often difficult to gain an overview about their packaging related properties. For this reason, Verena Jost from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV (Freising, Germany) extruded and analysed various commercially available biopolymers. The oxygen and water vapour barrier, crystallinity, tensile strength, elongation at break and Young’s modulus of PLA, PHAs, PHB, PHBHB, PHBV, TPS, PBAT, PBS, PCL and BioPE were analysed. The results show the broad range of mechanical and barrier properties of biopolymer films that can be achieved by currently available grades. From the functional point of view, the commodity polymers PE and PP can be well complemented by the analysed biopolymers.
