Materials Thermoplastic starch from the heart of Europe By: Gottfried Krapfenbauer (Sales Director Technical Specialities) and Barbara Fahrngruber (Teamlead R&D) AGRANA STÄRKE Vienna, Austria The need for green ingredients in bioplastics is becoming an important topic. Efficient resource management that addresses renewable materials and waste recovery is a crucial future step towards a circular economy. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) produced by AGRANA can help to fulfill these requirements. AMITROPLAST ® Starch, itself consisting of the two polymers amylose and amylopectin, is an amazing and very versatile material, making it an important base for modern bioplastics. In the production of bioplastics, Agrana uses its many years of expertise in the production and processing of starch and supplements this with the knowledge of the needs of the plastics industry. With the Amitroplast product family, Agrana provides user-friendly TPS (Thermoplastic Starch) for extrusion, film blowing, injection moulding and 3D printing. Amitroplast is bio-based, biodegradable and can be disposed of in a home or industrial composting environment. All Amitroplast products allow users to incorporate significant amounts of TPS and thus, to create tailor-made Starch TPS Blend Final Product • Nongenetically modified • Renewable raw material • Biodegradable • Compostable • Biobased • Made in Austria Material adaptation specifically to requirements by combination with other bio-polymers and additives Products with the previously customdetermined properties polymer compounds that are processable by using standard polymer equipment and capable of adding extra value to innovative products. The material properties of a 25 µm film, based on a compound that consists of 50 % Amitroplast and 50 % PBAT (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate), results typically in an extensibility of approximately 350 % and a tensile strength of 20-25 MPa. Furthermore, the new technology of Amitroplast significantly reduces the development of fumes during film blowing. Amitroplast is produced from renewable and regional raw material. All ingredients are derived from non-geneticallymodified sources. R&D at Agrana The journey of implementing sustainable solutions to ensure the fulfillment of today´s and future demands is not yet over. Agrana employs a significant number of scientists and technicians who conduct applied research and customer-oriented product development.
