Sulzer acquires stake in Cellicon Sulzer (Winterthur, Switzerland) has partnered with CELLiCON (Hoevelaken, the Netherlands) to scale up its groundbreaking manufacturing technology for nano structured cellulose – a highly sustainable, plant-based alternative to conventional polymers. The technology slashes the traditionally high costs and footprint associated with nanocellulose, allowing it to be scaled and used as a building block for a wide variety of everyday products. The partnership is part of Sulzer’s strategy to continue its grow path in renewables and enable its customers’ sustainable manufacturing practices. Sulzer has acquired a minority stake in Cellicon with an option to increase its holding in future. Cellicon has developed groundbreaking technology, known as G2 technology, that greatly reduces the costs, cycle times, and environmental footprint associated with the production of nanocellulose, thereby enabling the large-scale adoption of this highly sustainable biopolymer. Nanocellulose is a building block for a multitude of materials and products such as textiles and high-performance fibres, composites like superglues and coatings, transparent films, and replacements for starch and polystyrene. Sulzer Chemtech will support Cellicon in the scale-up and commercialization of the G2 technology. As a result, the collaboration will help Cellicon achieve its strategic goals and long-term vision while strengthening Sulzer Chemtech’s portfolio of processing technologies for biobased and renewable feedstocks. In particular, the solution can be used to further enhance the properties of polylactic acid (PLA), the most used bioplastic worldwide for which Sulzer Chemtech is the global leader. MT www.sulzer.com www.cellicon.org CJ Biomaterials’ PHA soon to be in Accor hotels CJ Biomaterials, a division of South Korea-based (Seoul) CJ CheilJedang, recently announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the global hotel chain Accor (Issy-les- Moulineaux, France) to begin developing hotel amenities that are made with biobased and biodegradable PHA. Through this agreement, the two companies will work together to replace single-use plastic amenities that are provided to all Accor hotel guests, which will help the hotel chain to deliver on its commitment to phase out all single-use plastic items in guest experience from its hotels by the end of 2022. Established in France in 1967, Accor operates more than 5,000 hotels in 110 countries around the world. Their catalogue of brands includes Fairmont, Pullman, Novotel, the Delano, Swissotel, and other luxury hotel chains. Through the initial agreement, Accor and CJ Biomaterials will replace plastic products used at Accor’s hotel chains in Korea, including cups, plastic bags, combs, stationery, and various amenity containers with PHA-based products. The two organizations will then expand the agreement to hotels in the Asia- Pacific region, and if positive results are obtained, the intent is to expand the use of PHA globally. In addition to eliminating all single-use plastic items in guest experience from its hotels by the end of this year, Accor added specific guidelines to encourage the use of materials that are biodegradable at home, in the soil or at sea, or that are recycled or derived from paper or wood. CJ Biomaterials is a pioneer in the development of PHA and is the world’s first and only producer of amorphous PHA, which is TÜV OK Certified for industrial and home compost, soil biodegradable, and marine biodegradable. It is considered home compostable meaning that it does not require specialized equipment or elevated temperatures to fully degrade. CJ Biomaterials has started producing amorphous PHA at its manufacturing facility in Pasuruan, Indonesia, and plans to increase production to meet expected demand. Branded as PHACT ® Marine Biodegradable Polymers, CJ Biomaterials' amorphous PHA is a softer, more rubbery version of PHA that offers fundamentally different performance characteristics than the crystalline or semicrystalline forms that currently dominate the PHA market.
