Cover-Story ICBP Bio Resin: Making a Difference Where bioplastic becomes a key player in a global game of sustainability Most importantly, it is developed to be as adaptable as conventional petroleum resin, and can also be used as replacement composites for moulded products. This makes ICBP Bio Resin an attractive and affordable bioplastic bridging option for countries and corporations that actively promote sustainability as part of their agenda. NOT A WASTE OF OPPORTUNITY In endorsing the use of biodegradable resin locally, ICBP was recently approached by KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd—a subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) under the Selangor state government in Malaysia— to discuss the use of bio-based products in the company’s services. KDEB Waste was established to manage the domestic waste collection and public cleansing services at all municipalities in Selangor, Malaysia. 2018 is shaping up to be an outstanding year for Indochine Bio Plastiques (ICBP) Sdn Bhd as it celebrates winning the Most Influential Sustainable Entrepreneur Awards 2018. Awarded by the Asia Pacific CSR Council, this recognition appreciates businesses, projects, and ideas that have identified a social problem and linked its solution with an innovative, profitable commercial idea. INDUSTRY TRAILBLAZER ICBP is highly regarded as Malaysia’s anchor in the bioplastics industry, promoting sustainability through their product: biodegradable, bio-based and compostable plastic resins from nonfood grade tapioca starch (‘ICBP Bio Resin’). Supported by intensive R&D, ICBP Bio Resin offers multiple advantages. It is inexpensive, renewable, and abundant in quantity. Equally impressive is its purity, low cost of production, low energy consumption, reduced carbon footprint, and its quality as a non-food grade bioplastic. Off the shelf, there are two types of bio resin available: biobased injection moulding resin and compostable blow film resin. ICBP RISES TO THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE As an international participant in the field of bioplastic, ICBP also believes that it can contribute to the EU’s commitment to sustainability. Recently, ICBP was featured in an article from PlastForum DK (13 August 2018). The article highlights ICBP’s new partnership with Greenway to distribute ICBP Bio Resin in Northern Europe. Greenway— who has built a network for companies that are already dealing with bioplastics, or are likely to—would be an invaluable partner for ICBP. “We have been in dialogue with Greenway for a year, and the match between our companies is good,” said Amir bin Abul Hasan Ashari, managing director of ICBP. The primary problem encountered in the process of injection moulding for other bio resins is the products’ vulnerability to high temperatures. This problem is resolved with ICBP’s product as it can withstand heat impact of up to 120 degrees. Most bioproducts are only able to tolerate up to half of that temperature before losing their integrity. Sustainability – Starts Now www.icbp.com.my 22 bioplastics MAGAZINE [05/18] Vol. 13
