Materials New compostable PHA based compound from Canada Bosk Bioproducts offers a new generation of “Clean Plastic” For more than 10 years, researchers at the INRS in Quebec (Canada) have been developing a biotechnology to produce PHA (polyhydroxy alkanoate), a biopolymer that can replace conventional plastic. What makes Bosk’s Clean plastic so different? The PHA is produced from by-products from the Pulp and paper industry. Bosk’s objective is to ensure accessibility to the objects of everyday life without jeopardizing the sustainability of the planet. Recently at BIO 2017, Bosk presented its clean plastic business model regrouping different lines of compounds dedicated to the plastic industry and consumers wanting sustainable products. Regen, compounds for plastic truly compostable As we speak, the only solution that avoids the accumulation of plastics is composting. The Regen compounds series of Bosk’s bioplastic is fully compostable. Based on Bosk’s proprietary PHA, and a choice of eco-friendly ingredients, the Regen compounds can be used for finished products from standard processes like injection, extrusion or thermoforming. These Regen compounds can finally meet the most stringent requirements in terms of standards for composting. At the end of their useful life, objects made with Bosk’s Regen compounds can be designed to be thrown into industrial or home composting facilities. This sustainable method of plastic disposal promotes by natural processes the regeneration of plastic components in nutrients and other constituents into our environment without toxic impact. Compostable, but also durable No need to worry about product durability. PHA adds a clever blend of ingredients to meet consumer demands while ensuring compostability at home or at industrial sites. Degradation begins only when the object is in contact with the natural bacteria living in the soil and the time required for degradation can be as short as a few weeks up to a few months. Plastic designed to reduce our impact on the environment Moreover, in order to obtain the most natural product and reduce its impact on the environment, this new generation of plastic does not originate from GMOs nor does it contains toxic additives such as BPA and phtalates. When compared to the production of conventional plastic, this bioplastic makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint. And here’s the icing on the cake: the raw material of this plastic is an untapped by-product of the pulp and paper industry. Materials By: Paul Boudreault CEO Bosk Bioproducts Quebéc, Canada compromises. Both the product and the production process are developed to reduce their impact on the environment. The goal is to create plastic products that meet the growing demand from new eco-conscious consumers. Bosk’s PHA production capacity based on the pulp and paper industry Production capacity of Bosk’s PHA is based on the pulp and paper industry’s investments in product diversification. Bosk is in discussions with a major P&P company in Canada to sub-licence the technology and start PHA production. It will be possible to have a PHA production facility at any P&P mill. “We are evaluating PHA production facilities to implement in the next two years from 3,000 and up to 25,000 tonnes/years with our first P&P partner” said Paul Boudreault, CEO of Bosk at BIO-2017 in Montreal. By integrating the technology in existing P&P mills, it reduces by far capital investment needs and production costs required for conventional PHA production. Having developed expertise in compounding this new PHA, Bosk is now developing customer interest to ensure a market destination for finished compounds and plastic products. This new Value-chain model allows Bosk to reduce the distance between the PHA producer and the eco-conscious consumer. www.bosk-bioproducts.com/ European Bioplastics 12 TH CONFERENCE Making the difference 28/29 November 2017 maritim proArte Hotel Berlin @EUBioplastics #eubpconf2017 www.european-bioplastics.org/conference bioplastics MAGAZINE [04/17] Vol. 12 31
