Interpack Review Plastiroll Plastiroll Oy from Ylöjärvi, Finland produces a wide range of ecological packaging materials, from recyclable fibre-based barrier materials to compostable bioplastic materials. With over 15 years of experience, Plastiroll is today one of the most important manufacturers of biodegradable packaging films and bags in Europe. The product range includes Bioska Bio Films, Rock - Bio-coextrusion coated paperboard and kraft paper, Jazz - Compostable, and recyclable materials, with Eco Barrier dispersion coatings and Classic-Recyclable paperboard materials with coextrusion barrier coatings and laminated structures. Bioska — 100 % Biodegradable and compostable packaging films, and bio-bags are produced under the brand name Bioska. Bioska products are certified according to DIN EN 13432 standard. Rock - Bio-coextrusion coated paperboard and kraft paper are produced under the Rock series of products. These materials provide among others excellent grease barrier, as well as resistance to water. Jazz - Compostable, and recyclable materials, with Eco Barrier dispersion coatings, are especially suitable for fast food packages, and could be used in microwave oven. Classic -Recyclable paperboard materials with coextrusion barrier coatings and laminated structures, for food packaging and for industrial applications. Plastiroll is also committed to continuous development of environmental performance, and have since 2010: FSC certification (FSC Mix COC / FSC CW) and PEFC certification (PEFC COC - Chain of Custody). Plastiroll has been able to reduce significantly the use of energy for heating of bio-film factory by reclaiming the process energy released from bio-film production. The bio-film factory uses only wind power, and thus the total energy consumption in bio-film production is CO 2 neutral. www.plastiroll.fi United Biopolymers United Biopolymers S.A. headquartered in Figuera da Foz, Portugal is a technology licensing company that enables plastic compounders to access new markets and innovate, plastic converters to manufacture biobased, biodegradable, and bio-neutral plastic, and brand owners to satisfy the end-users’ demand for greener plastics. The company acquired in 2014 the patented BIOPAR ® technology, which enables producing GuiltfreePlastics. The products are based, up to 90 %, on renewable materials, and can be – if required – 100 % biodegradable at the same time. Technically United Biopolymers’ bioplastics could replace 90 % of today’s polyethylene applications. Therefore, the company’s vision is “to make Biopar the world’s standard for the production and innovation in the area of starchbased bioplastics”. On their website United Biopolymers distinguishes three types of products. Biopar bio-based is a bioplastic, which contains some biobased material as a raw material. This means, technically it is a hybrid consisting of both oil-based polymers and some (up to 40 %) from a renewable source. The final product is not biodegradable This product is ideal for any type of durable plastic applications or barrier films used for modified atmospheric packaging. Biopar biodegradable is a biodegradable bioplastics, which contains only biodegradable and up to 60 % bio-based raw materials. It is compostable according to DIN13234. This products is ideal for refusal bags, most packaging applications, caps & closures, primary and secondary packaging film, trays and cutlery, and all other plastic applications that need to be compostable. Biopar bio-neutral is the company’s most environmentally friendly bioplastics. It can be based on up to 90 % of biobased materials from renewable sources and it is 100 % biodegradable. Typical applications for Biopar bio-neutral are hygiene applications (especially in biohazard areas), packaging applications with a high-level risk of irresponsible disposal.
