Spain Compostable

Spain Compostable plastic solutions from Spain By: Grégory Coué Technical Manager Kompuestos Palau Solità i Plegamans, Spain Kompuestos is a Spanish company founded in 1986 in Palau Solità i Plegamans near Barcelona. Over the last three decades, Kompuestos has positioned itself as one of the main international suppliers of a large variety of masterbatches (high performance mineral fillers, additives, white, black, colours and monopigments), mainly based on polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, all of which are intended to meet the needs of very diverse markets in the plastic industry, such as for packaging and containers, agriculture, construction, sports and toys, furniture and garden articles, automotive, hygiene and home care, among them. Kompuestos has acquired a great knowledge of the market, thanks to the quality and efficiency of its materials, services and customized solutions; as well as its close relationship with the different players in the plastic sector. Kompuestos puts at the service of its clients a highly specialized team that offers customized solutions and responds to every need. With an annual turnover exceeding 30 million euros, an outstanding international presence in more than 40 countries, and a production capacity standing over 43,000 tonnes per year and still increasing, Kompuestos has established itself as one of the leading companies in the sector and keep on expanding its business horizons. Following the adoption of Directive (EU) 2015/720 of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 94/62/EC working on the reduction of lightweight plastic carrier bags, the European plastic market has started to evolve towards more sustainable solutions. Although France and Italy were the first countries to take measures to ban the usage of single- use bags made of conventional resins to privilege biodegradable and compostable carriers, Spain had remained a step behind. As a supplier of the largest plastic transformers in Spain, Kompuestos is in a key position to play an influential role to supply attractive and sustainable alternative for conventional plastics. “There is a need for change. We have to provide green alternatives to our products made of conventional plastics” stated Ignacio Duch, Kompuestos’ president. That is how Kompuestos started to work on bioplastics solutions that are both biodegradable and based on renewable sources. Kompuestos has been developing proprietary thermoplastic starch and is ready to supply it at industrial scale. To meet the requirements of the new Energy Transition for Green Growth Act (France) and the growing demand for ecofriendly and sustainable plastic solutions, Kompuestos has developed, in collaboration with DuPont Biomaterials, one of the world’s leading bio-based materials businesses, resin formulations for the extrusion of compostable plastic bags with the goal to achieve home compostability certification. DuPont’s Nuvolve, a renewably sourced engineered polysaccharide, whose development was inspired by nature, has been shown to simulate and be synergistic in the biodegradability process and to show promising performance enhancements to products across multiple markets and applications. Additional development includes the development of compostable resins for thermoforming and injection moulding applications for the fabrication of disposable tableware, as well as enhanced biodegradable solutions for mulch films, and for hygiene articles. Kompuestos is planning to have its first product certified OK Compost by summer 2018, in order to launch it on the market by the end of the year. Other products are foreseen to be certified and released through 2019. | Compost to Soil Enhancement Material Natural Raw Material To Industrial or Home Composting Facility Convert to Packaging Used by Consumer 44 bioplastics MAGAZINE [02/18] Vol. 13
