Once again, we carried out our little non-representative survey, in order to gain an idea about the general perception of bioplastics in that country. In this seventh edition of the series, I visited a busy office building complex with cafes and small stores on the ground floor in Bangkok. I was accompanied and supported by Pissapak Srihaphan of PTT MCC. As always, we approached a (non-representative) number of passers-by and asked whether they would be willing to answer a few brief questions. Of those we interviewed, 52 % were male and 48 % were female. About 80 % were aged between 20 and 40, while 20 % were between the ages of 40 and 60. This represented the average distribution of people scurrying around this busy area early on a Friday afternoon in mid-December 2017. When asked whether they knew what bioplastics were, a surprising 56 % confirmed and proved that they knew about the biobased origin and/or biodegradable features of bioplastics. And again, as always, the other 44 % wanted to know what bioplastics were. And after a brief explanation about the features and benefits, most seemed convinced that bioplastics were beneficial for the environment and for the climate. female male By: 20-40 years Michael Thielen 40-60 years 35,7% 64,3% YES 56% Do you know what bioplastics are? NO 44% 78,6% 21,4% 81,8% 18,2% 63,3% 36,4% And as usual, we also asked all our interviewees whether they would buy products made of bioplastics, if they should happen to see them on display at the store. This time all confirmed that they would, and all affirmed that they would be willing to pay more for such products. Of course, most of them added comments such as: “a little more, yes” or “but not twice as much”. This would appear to indicate that the efforts of the Thai Bioplastics Industry Association (TBIA) to enhance the knowledge of the public about bioplastics, is bearing fruit, at least among the better educated segments part of the public. Of course, when browsing some of the busy streets in Bangkok, I saw many different people, and this is certainly not the right place to discuss social differences… At the end of the day, we chose an office building complex for our survey … and Bangkok is certainly not representative for all of Thailand. But as we noted above, in performing this survey, we make no pretence to being anything more than a non-representative snapshot. MT SEEING POLYMERS WITH DIFFERENT EYES...
